5 stars of tense and exciting adventure with the Straw Hats.
From the pen of the genius that is Eiichiro Oda, One Piece Collection 10 has been given the Funimation treatment and brings us the continuation of the Water 7 arc (episodes 230 – 252).
The Straw Hat pirates have finally made it to the island of Water 7, carrying with them a substantial quantity of gold for trading in, to be used to fix their ship, the Going Merry, who is almost falling apart.
However, no sooner have they set foot on land than things begin to go wrong. While heading for the Shipyard, Nami (Luci Christian), Luffy (Colleen Clinkenbeard) and Usopp (Sonny Strait) are spotted by the Franky family, a local gang of bounty hunters, who want to take their money and claim the bounties on their heads.
The Shipyard they have selected to fix the ship is the magnificent Dockyard #1, run by the Galley-La company, owned by the much loved and respected Iceberg (Phillip Weber), who also happens to be the mayor. However, when they have the shipwrights examine the Going Merry, they receive the devastating news that she cannot be fixed.
While out shopping with Chopper (Brina Palencia), Robin (Stephanie Young) is approached by a masked stranger, who whispers the words CP9 to her, triggering a startling chain of betrayal and lies that will threaten the very existence of the crew.
After being captured by the Franky Family and losing the money, Usopp takes the news about Merry very badly and the Straw Hats tight knit crew begin to disintegrate along with their ship.
As you would expect from One Piece, this is a great story, packed with intrigue and twists and turns, so that you can never hope to predict what will come next. This arc is much darker than the previous ones and quite emotional in places, but a fantastic tale nonetheless.
An obvious must see for fans of One Piece, but a word of warning to anyone who is fond of Going Merry, there will be tears!
“Listen. A Ship is born with one promise. To carry you across the sea from one shore to another. That’s her sole purpose. The reason for her existence. Which means, when the time comes that a ship can no longer carry you across the sea, then that promise has been broken and she’s no longer a ship.”
