5 stars for this fantastic adaptation to live action.
Attack on Titan: The Movie – Part 1 is adapted from the hit Manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama and the hugely popular anime by Wit Studio and Production IG (Guilty Crown, Psycho Pass).
Attack on Titan is set in a world where mankind are very much on the back foot. They now share the planet with Titans, enormous humanoids who feed solely on humans.
The humans have been forced to retreat behind a series of enormous walls, so tall that the Titans cannot breach them. Inside these strongholds they live and work, but forever with the knowledge that they do not have their freedom.
It is now so long since the last Titan attack, 100 years, that the young people are growing restless and seeking to find out what lies beyond the walls. The wall guards have become lazy after so long inactive, so when one day an enormous Titan arrives, one big enough to breach the defences, no one is prepared and they have no choice but to retreat behind Wall Rose and give up their agricultural lands.
This forever changes the lives of our unlikely heroes, Eren Jaeger (Haruma Miura – The Eternal Zero), his adopted sister Mikasa (Kiko Mizuhara – Norwegian Wood) and their childhood friend Armin (Kanaka Hongo – Goth), who train as cadets, along with many others to take the fight to the enemy and attempt to regain the lands they have lost.
Attack on Titan: The Movie – Part 1 is a very enjoyable live action version of an already popular story. There are some significant differences in the story, but all the favourite characters are there and the Titans are far scarier in this than they were in the anime.
There are rivers of blood and guts and this is thoroughly deserving of its 18 certificate, there a plenty of scenes of people being eaten alive as well as lots of dismemberment.
Ts is a must own for fans of the franchise, but you don’t necessarily need to have seen the anime to enjoy this film. Well worth adding to your collection.
