4 Star War without the Conflict.
Andrew Niccol (The Host, Lord of War) writes and directs this story of how the 21st century has totally changed war as we know it, and the challenges the combatants face day to day.
Major Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke, Predestination, Moby Dick TV Mini Series) and his wife Molly (January Jones, Unknown) live in Las Vegas. Thomas used to be a fly boy, flying sorties over the field of battle, but that isn’t needed anymore so now he works in Texas with the UCAV.
His skills are still needed though, as a drone pilot to take out Taliban insurgents with pin point accuracy.
But when you’re firing at built up areas, there are bound to be non-combatants within the close vicinity. Thomas has some close calls as the travel time for his missile can be over ten seconds.
After 12 hours of flight time protecting men on the ground the last thing he needs is another round of arguing with his wife about his career choices.
How this affects Thomas is that he concentrates on his job, even though he wants to be in the air again, but things change when whilst on a mission a call comes in with a heavily disguised voice ordering strikes on other targets.
The acting by Hawke is by far his best performance to date as a lot of the dialogue is done by Thomas’s facial expressions as he stares at the bank of screens in front of him and his support crew. He is definitely the star of this film and it is well worth the time watching it, and it may throw up a few questions along the way and possibly even a few conspiracies.
