4 Star Personal Journey West.
First time writer/director John Maclean brings us a strange tale of a young man’s lost love.
This is a far cry from the westerns of old (1940-50’s) with more of a script that makes it personal and intimate rather than the big sweeping vistas of Monument Valley and long shots of the cavalry.
Well to-do Young Scottish lad Jay Cavendish Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road) fell in love with the wrong class of girl, Rose Ross Caren Pistorius (The Most Fun You Can Have Dying) and when she and her father John Ross Rory McCann (Game of Thrones) flee to the American West, Jay’s love knows no bounds and he sets off after her.
As he heads West he encounters the natives both alive and dead as he encounters some renegade soldiers chasing down and killing the native Americans after burning their village. Things are about to get ugly for Jay when out of the woods a masked stranger comes to his aid.
The stranger is Silas Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) a man with skills that Jay needs, $50 dollars now and another when they find them.
It doesn’t take long for Silas to find out the truth about John and Rose Ross, a $2,000 reward dead or alive. Silas isn’t the only one headed for Colorado. Payne Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises) and his gang, whom Silas used to rid with.
The pair encounter many things as they head through the stunning scenery of New Zealand.
Great acting with Fassbender holding it all together as we travel the miles on horseback. A good start to John Maclean‘s portfolio.
