3 stars for a very bizarre slice of life story.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Too! is based on the light novels by Wataru Watari and adapted into anime by Studio Feel. It follows on directly from the end of the first series and is once again directed by Kei Oikawa.
“I like how you’re so open with people who don’t matter to you.”
Once again we find ourselves following the fortunes of the students of Souba High School, most especially the members of the Service Club, thrown together by their strange and highly strung teacher, Shizuka, who wants to help them relate to others.
Hachiman Hikigaya is a social outcast of his own making, he has always been a loner and doesn’t want that to change. Yukino is shunned for her looks and intelligence and Yui, the third and final member, simply wants to be helpful.
The excitement generated by the cultural festival has started to die down, but it isn’t long before a student comes to them with a problem to be solved, this time on a school trip to Kyoto. As ever, Hachiman comes up with an excellent plan, but his failure to consider other’s feelings leads to discontent within the club.
As the series continues, there are new problems to be solved for other students, but what they should really be looking at is themselves, their families and the relationships within the club.
Don’t be misled by the title here, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Too! is not a comedy, nor will you find any romance here. The whole thing is rather dark and very introspective and has a tendency to get a bit pompous in places.
The animation is lovely, as are the locations, but somehow, the lack of real progression for either the story or the characters does ultimately detract from the experience. Still a good watch, but doesn’t quite live up to expectations.
“I hate the way you do things. I can’t explain it well, but I hate the way you do things.”
