“Have more confidence Hachiken. Because of the whole pizza and bacon thing, some have taken to calling you ‘the guy who never says no!'”
Silver Spoon tells us the story of Hachiken Yuugo (Ryōhei Kimura – Eden of the East, Mawaru Penguindrum), a schoolboy born and raised in the city of Sapporo. Having failed his entrance exams for the high school of his choice, he elects for a boarding school as far away from his overly strict father as he can manage.
The school he chooses is the Hokkaido Ooezo Agricultural High School, where he joins the Dairy Science department. Hell bent on academic success, he believes that the reduced workload will give him more time for study, but he soon discovers this is not the case at all.
Hachiken has now been at Ooezo college for a while and has begun to settle in and find his feet. Now with plenty of good friends, he throws himself wholeheartedly into every endeavor, sometimes even to the detriment of his own health.
He is finally discovering who he wants to be as a person and is extremely caring and protective of his friends. He also loves animals, becoming Vice President of the Equestrian Club and adopting an adorable puppy named Vice Prez!
Excitement reaches fever pitch as the Ezono festival approaches and the College are also avidly supporting their baseball team. However, the real world begins to intrude as money worries, debt and bankruptcy force the students to face the harsh realities of agriculture. As always, Hachiken will be there to support his friends anyway he can, as they in turn help him to overcome his own problems.
Silver Spoon Season 2 is an excellent anime presented in a very nice package. It’s well written with excellent character development and it’s one of the best coming of age stories I’ve seen. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and there’s plenty of comedy, interspersed with more sombre moments. It’s also strangely educational, I know far more about agriculture than I did before watching this!
It’s laid back and heartwarming and makes for a lovely gentle watch. A must own for fans of slice-of-life anime.
“If you were a cow, do you think you’d want an amateur groping around in your b*tthole?”
