Victims and Perpetrators.
Cey Sesiguzel (Secret of the Mediterranean: North Cyprus) directs their first feature length documentary, out in UK cinemas 1st November 2024, this in-depth look at the divided island of Cyprus as we hit the fiftieth anniversary of the division. But it goes further back than that, much further back, four-thousand years to the Greeks and all those who have invaded and inhabited the island of Cyprus. With eyewitness accounts and analysis from experts, we delve into the tragedy that is Cyprus, and try to see if there can ever be forgiveness?
Cyprus, at the Eastern end of the Mediterranean, has always been strategically placed and intrinsically linked to the Greek empire, The Turkish, Maronites, Latins, Armenia, and Roma. But for the last four-hundred years, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have lived together.
We were happy with each other.
Unless it is in self-defence, War is suicide.
Cyprus has a chequered past, but it is in recent history that conflict has totally divided the island, whether it is ideology, faith, politics or just mistrust, and not knowing the outcome of loved ones. This is the story of the modern Cyprus told by those that were, and the experts that have studied it in depth.
The Divided Island is a history lesson and a very harrowing tale of what humankind can do to each other, maybe not for the faint of heart, but an amazing insight into what most people would consider just a beautiful holiday destination, but its history permeates everything.
If you hide the grave, you hide the crime.
We have to think of tomorrow.
