4 star fun and light hearted Demon Girl anime sequel.

The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2 is the 2022 anime sequel to The Demon Girl Next Door (2019). It is based on the four panel manga series by Izumo Itō and adapted for anime by Studio J.C. Staff (A Certain Magical Index, Golden Time) and directed by Hiroaki Sakurai (Winter Garden, Maid Sama!).

It is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray from 4th October 2024 courtesy of MVM Entertainment, with the original Japanese track as well as an English dub.

This season carries on directly from the end of Season one, so it’s highly recommended to watch that series first in order to understand who everyone is.

“Meet Shadow Mistress Yuko, the Demon Girl who recently gained her dark powers and Magical Girl Momo Chiyoda, who once saved the world. Their fated summer vacation of light and darkness is about to begin.”

Yuko Yoshida (Monica RialTokyo Ghoul:re, Yuri!!! On Ice) is a young school girl who awakened one morning with horns and a tail and soon discovered she was in fact a Demon Girl by descent. Her ancestor Lilith (Emily NevesGuilty Crown, Himouto! Umaru-Chan) is now with her in the form of a statue that she can carry around. She’s tasked with defeating the local Magical Girl, Momo Chiyoda (Genevieve SimmonsGirls und Panzer, Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions), who unfortunately happens to be in her class at school. She is far more powerful and the two hit it off really well, so although they are mortal enemies, they also become good friends.

This series tells the tale of summer vacation, when Momo gets herself a new flat next door to Yuko and fellow Magical Girl and citrus obsessed friend Mikan (Christina KellyBrynhildr in the Darkness) takes the apartment on the other side. Surrounded by Magical Girls, Yuko continues her search for the truth about what happened to her father, trapped in a cardboard box. They find a local demon cafe, run by the demon tapir Shirosawa (Rob Mungle – Vinland Saga) and his chef Lico (Monica MolanoMy Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, a talented herbalist. They also continue the search for Momo’s missing sister Sakura (Allison SumrallChaika: Coffin Princess) as well as negotiating all the associated Magical Girl issues.

“Uh oh, my ancestor just got confiscated!”

The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2 is a really entertaining watch. As with all magical girl anime, it’s noisy, cheerful and very colourful. It’s lighthearted and not at all challenging, great when you just want to relax with a good anime.

Fans of the first series will love this and there are plenty of revelations, we learn more about the characters respective histories, as well as discovering the ultimate fate of Momo’s sister Sakura.

Great fun and well worth adding to your collection.

“I was as depressed as a Ponderosa Lemon, but know I’m singing on Cloud Nine. Living on my own is full of new experiences that are so much fun.”
