Sengoku Basara Samurai Kings Movie: The Last Party is one hell of a title for a film to have to live up to. And yet somehow they have managed it.
This is based on the popular TV series, Sengoku Basara Samurai Kings and is set in the Sengoku period of Japan, when rival generals fought in endless battles for power and ultimately unification of Japan.
The film begins with a recap (handy if you haven’t seen the previous story) of the battles between Nobunage Oda and Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura.
We begin as Ishida Mitsunari (subordinate of Hideyoshi) begins a killing spree, targeted at Date Masamune in an attempt to avenge his master.
At the same time, Ieyasu Tokugawa seeks to unite the other warlords under a banner of peace and begins to bring them all together for the first time.
When a letter (from persons unknown) is sent to all the warlords to gather at Sekigahara (home of the giant cook-pot), it soon starts to become apparent that they have walked into a trap, some larger plot is afoot and the warlords must unite against a common but unknown enemy.
The animation in Sengoku Barasa is very impressive, with many epic and quite mind boggling battle sequences. Although I felt that the introduction made the whole thing sound a bit tedious (it did explain everything, but rather too matter of factly for my taste), once it gets going this is actually a very exciting film, well written and with a great storyline and plenty of twists and turns.
This is really very enjoyable to watch, plenty of humour and plenty of serious fight action. This release is dubbed into English, so no need for subtitles (although they are available if you want them).
I would thoroughly recommend adding this one to your collection.
