3 star interesting take on the vampire genre.
The Shed is written by Jason Rice (his first venture into film) and co-written and directed by Frank Sabatella (Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet). It is produced by Peter Block (Saw), Mike Mendez (Snake Outta Compton) and Cory Neal (Hatchet).
“You’ve been trying to get into her pants every day since eighth grade when she let you feel her up in Marco Ritchie’s basement, remember that?”
Stan (Jay Jay Warren – Unintended, Day of Reckoning) is a troubled orphan, approaching his eighteenth birthday. Having been in trouble with the law he is now on probation, living with his abusive grandfather Ellis (Timothy Bottoms – Elephant, Pound of Flesh), who makes his life miserable.
His problems are nothing however, compared to those of his best friend Dommer (Cody Kostro – Worst Friends, Instinct), who has been the punchbag for the local bully Marble (Chris Petrovski – Madam Secretary) and his sidekicks Pitt (Francisco Burgos – Nature Calls) and Ozzy (Uly Schlesinger – Two Eyes) for many years.
To add insult to injury Marble has also stolen away his crush Roxy (Sofia Happonen) who has chosen to run with the in-crowd to make her life easier. He also faces scrutiny from the local Sheriff Dorney (Siobhan Fallon Hogan – Men In Black), who keeps an eye on him all the time.
All of their lives are about to change when Stan’s next door neighbour Bane (Frank Whaley – Under the Dome, Pulp Fiction) goes into the woods to investigate what has been killing his rabbits. He is bitten by a vampire who turns him and then is immediately rendered to a pile of dust by sunlight.
Bane runs to the nearest building for cover, Stan’s shed, a grisly state of affairs which leads to a shift in the balance of power. Who can bully you when you have a monster in the shed?
The Shed is a very entertaining film to watch. It is an interesting take on the vampire tale, with a well written story to go alongside all the blood and gore (of which there is plenty). Teenage angst and mayhem go hand in hand very nicely, with good special effects and decent acting performances all round. It won’t set the world on fire but it’s a perfectly enjoyable romp.
A great way to spend a night on the sofa, well worth a watch for any horror fans.
“Get in the shed…”
