4 stars of hilarious and very gory zomcom.
Little Monsters is an international co-production between Australia, the U.K. and the United States and set in Australia. It is written and directed by Abe Forsythe, a magnificent debut and extremely promising start.
“Dave, there are plenty of things to be scared of in this world, but having a kid isn’t one of them”
Dave (Alexander England – Alien: Covenant, Gods of Egypt) is a washed up former musician with a very bad swearing habit. Constantly at odds with his girlfriend Sara (Nadia Townsend – Restoration) he finally leaves, moving in with his long suffering sister Tess (Kat Stewart – Underbelly, Offspring) and her highly allergic five year old son Felix (Diesel La Torraca – Lambs of God).
He doesn’t have the first idea how to act around kids, but when he takes Felix to school one day, he discovers a penchant for Kindergarten teachers, specifically the bubbly Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyong’o – 12 Years a Slave, Us). He is determined to get to know her, so he volunteers to act alongside her as a chaperone on a school trip.
With her trusty Ukulele in hand and a song in her heart, Miss Caroline and Dave set off with their group of young charges for Pleasant Valley Farm, which is indeed pleasant to begin with. As a surprise for the children, their favourite T.V. character Teddy McGiggle (Josh Gad – Frozen, Pixels) is there on tour.
Unfortunately for all concerned, it just happens to be right next to a U.S. Military testing facility which is having a small problem. The subjects of “Project Regeneration” (i.e. zombies) have escaped and are about to make this little outing a whole lot more exciting. True colours will be shown, but can Miss Caroline and Dave keep the children safe or will they end up with a class of “little monsters”?
Little Monsters is a laugh-out-loud funny film and really entertaining to watch. It is utterly outrageous in places, but this is somewhat tempered by a surprisingly touching story which underlies all the blood, guts and deeply black comedy. It is a beautifully acted, blood drenched, foul mouthed journey of self discovery, with a couple of startling song and dance routines, which all goes to show that you can find hidden gems in the most unexpected places.
A brilliant feature debut, I can’t wait to see what Abe Forsythe has in store for us next. This is a must own for fans of the comedy horror genre, well worth adding to your collection.
“If your big idea is to drive in a tractor designed to pull f**k monkeys around a farm, then you’re bigger idiots than I thought, and I thought you were both the stupidest people I’d ever met.”
Little Monsters is available now on Digital Download, DVD and Blu-ray.
