4 Star
East Meets West.
At a time when Schwarzenegger (Conan the Barbarian, The Terminator, Commando, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Aftermath) was proving he was a Hollywood star, popular writer/director Walter Hill (The Driver, The Warriors, The Long Riders, 48 Hrs.) partners him with the wise cracking James Belushi (Salvador, K-9, Last Action Hero) for this Red meets the Red, White and Blue.
It’s cold and snowing in Moscow but Ivan Danko (Schwarzenegger) is in the buff in a sauna/gym looking for drug smuggler Viktor Rostavili (Ed O’Ross, Full Metal Jacket, Dick Tracy, Universal Soldier). He isn’t there but his goons are and Danko ends up in a fist fight in the snow.
Danko and his partner Yuri Ogarkov (Oleg Vidov, Jackie Chan’s First Strike, Three Days in August) keep on Rosta’s trail and finally find him in a bar. This time there is back up when Ivan finally tracks him down and confronts him. A gunfight ensues as Rosta and his goons flee in a hail of bullets and there is tragedy for Ivan as Yuri is shot and killed by Rosta, who manages to get away and then elopes to Chicago USA.
In Chicago Viktor carries on with his plan to flood Moscow with narcotics, in a five million dollar deal with his American contacts. But he is careless and gets arrested for a traffic violation. This gets back to Moscow and Ivan is dispatched to extradite hi, but he is under strict orders not to divulge that he is wanted for drug smuggling.
“Very strange city. The crime is organized; the police is not.”
When Danko arrives in Chicago he is met by Art Ridzik (James Belushi) and his partner Max Gallagher (Richard Bright, Once Upon a Time in America, The Godfather Part III) who escort him to the police station to pick up Viktor. When Danko interrogates Viktor he manages to get a locker key from him, but he won’t say where the locker is.
On the way out they are attacked by some of Viktors drug dealing friends and Max is killed as Viktor makes his escape.
“Capatalism!”
Now it is personal and both have a reason to get Vicktor.
“Since I figure cops are cops the world over, how do you Soviets deal with all the tension and stress?”
“Vodka.”
