4 Star
Viva La Revolution.
Masters of Cinema have done it again with this restoration of Sergio Sollima‘s (Revolver, Violent City) 1968 Spaghetti Western. This limited edition (3000 copies) brings you the uncut version (120 mins), and the original 85-Minute release. From the harsh sunlight of the deserts through to the thick deep snow of the mountains, all for the biggest pay-out ever, but who will get their hands on it? For the Revolution, or for the Greed.
The revolution is in full flow against Diaz’s ruthless government, but they have hit a snag, no bullets, and they need more guns. Revolution leader Santillana (John Ireland, Red River, Spartacus) had a plan, the poet of the revolution Ramirez (José Torres, Face to Face, Children of the Salt) has squirrelled away $3,000,000, this will supply the revolution with enough funds to overthrow the government.
But our story starts with the main character Manuel ‘Cuchillo‘ Sanchez (Tomas Milian, JFK, Traffic) returning to his home town, and into the wanting arms of his woman Dolores (Chelo Alonso, Son of Samson, Morgan the Pirate), who is always trying to make an honest man out of him. He has returned without a present for her, so he does what he does best, steal, and it is American Nathaniel Cassidy (Nathaniel Cassidy, The Name of the Rose, The Train) that is his mark.
Cassidy is a retired sheriff, and now he has his own agenda, but it will be intertwined with ‘Cuchillo’s. It isn’t long before Cuchillo’s antics get him arrested, he is thrown in a cell with Ramirez, who has been granted a pardon by Diaz, and he will be released in the morning. But Ramirez wants out now, and he offers Cuchillo $100 to get him out tonight. They are successful, and they head to Ramirez’s village, where they are warmly welcomed. But that soon changes when Riza (Nello Pazzafini, A Long Ride from Hell, Two Guns and a Coward) and his band of bandits turns up to find out where the three million dollars in gold is hidden. When Ramirez refuses to divulge the information, innocent villagers start dying and in trying to save a young mother, Ramirez is fatally shot. Cuchillo rushes to the dying poet, who gives him a piece of paper and tells him where the treasure is hidden.
Now Cuchillo is in trouble as everybody wants a piece of three million dollars, even Dolores. Run Cuchillo Run, he must get across the border and on his way he comes across Sergeant Penny Bannington (Linda Veras, Sexy Gang, Face to Face) of the Salvation Army, who just so happens to be going in the right direction for him.
Will Cuchillo get to his destination, or will one of the others get their hands on the piece of paper Ramirez gave him? You just have to watch this remastered, Uncut version to find out. A must for the Spaghetti Western fan in the house.
