4 star long awaited return of a legend.
Star Trek: Picard is part of the highly popular long-running sci-fi franchise. This incarnation follows on from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation and the events of the film Star Trek: Nemesis.
“I kept seeing you. I kept seeing your face. I came because the lightning that kept me alive led me here. Everything inside of me says that I’m safe with you.”
Former Admiral Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart – X Men, American Dad!) has long since retired from Starfleet and is now living at Chateau Picard in France with his delightfully named dog, Number One, and looked after by his help, Laris (Orla Brady – Sinbad, American Horror Story) and Zhaban (Jamie McShane – Gone Girl, Sons of Anarchy).
He is haunted by dreams of his dear friend Data (Brent Spiner – Independence Day, Outcast) who gave his life to save him. He is also still deeply affected by the destruction of the Romulan home world and the decision taken by Starfleet to abandon the rescue attempt following the rogue synthetic attack on Mars and the Utopia Planetia shipyards.
“Tea, Earl Grey, decaff.”
Elsewhere in the world, a young woman named Dahj (Isa Briones – Takers) is celebrating admittance into the Daystrom Institute with her boyfriend, when unknown assailants break into her home. He is killed, but something awakens within her and she takes out their attackers. She also has a vision, the face of Jean Luc Picard.
When Dahj turns up on his doorstep asking for help she sets in motion a chain of events which will see our hero head back out to the stars. With the help of old friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) and her partner Rios (Santiago Cabrera – Salvation, The Musketeers) as well as Dr. Agnes Durati (Alison Pill – Goon, Dan in Real Life), they must try to find out what is happening before it is too late.
This series will delight fans of The Next Generation, filled with Easter eggs and welcome appearances by former crew members, guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye.
As wonderful as it is to revisit these beloved characters, this never feels like nostalgia for the sake of it. There is a strong story line which gives new purpose and meaning, as well as introducing lots of fascinating new members of the Star Trek family.
The haters will say that this is not Star Trek, it’s too gritty, there’s swearing, but I don’t see it that way. The world changes and a Star Trek unwilling to reflect that would be lessened in my opinion. This new generation is for a much changed modern world and carries the flag admirably.
A must own for fans of the Star Trek franchise, and a great introduction for those who are yet to discover it. Well worth adding to your collection and can’t wait for Season 2.
“If I’m right, you are the daughter of a man who was all courage, all meaning. Be like him.”
