4 star restoration of a fun and lively film.

Tank Girl is a 1995 post-apocalyptic sci-fi comedy action film, based on the popular British comic book series of the same name written by Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin.

It is adapted for the screen by Tedi Sarafian (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) and directed by Rachel Talalay (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).

It is presented here in it’s UK Blu-ray debut, as a Limited Collector’s Edition set, courtesy of Eureka Classics and is available to own from 25th November 2024.

“Look, if you want to torture me, spank me, lick me, do it. But if this poetry sh*t continues, shoot me now, please.”

The year is 2033 and the Earth has been in a state of drought for over a decade, following an apocalyptic event, a comet striking the planet. What little water remains is under the control of the Water and Power (W&P) Corporation, run by megalomaniac Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell – A Clockwork Orange, Star Trek: Generations), who rules with an iron fist by distributing the water as he sees fit.

In the Australian Outback is a commune, who operate the final water well not owned by the W&P Corporation. This commune is home to the outspoken and defiant Tank Girl (Lori Petty – Point Break, A League of Their Own) and her family. To maintain his monopoly, Kesslee attacks the commune, killing Tank Girl’s boyfriend and kidnapping her and her young friend Sam (Stacey Linn Ramsower – The Babysitter’s Club). As it happens, this was a huge mistake, as Tank Girl likes to cause trouble. She meets Jet Girl (Naomi Watts – Mulholland Drive, King Kong), a shy and retiring jet engineer in the employ of W&P and they strike up a friendship.

An attack by the mysterious Rippers (kangaroo human hybrids) allows Tank Girl and Jet Girl to escape. With the help of their new acquaintances Booga (Jeff Kober – Sully, Sons of Anarchy (TV Series)), Deetee (Reg E. Cathey – The Mask, Airheads) and T-Saint (Ice-T – New Jack City, Surviving the Game), they begin to make the kind of mayhem only they can.

“You gotta think about it like the first time you got laid. You just gotta say: “Daddy, are you sure this is right?”

Tank Girl is a very entertaining film. It’s completely bonkers and wasn’t a big hit at the box office but it’s gained somewhat of a cult status in the intervening years.

There are lots and lots of very funny one liners, huge amounts of violent action sequences and plenty of famous faces, most of whom  are unrecognisable due to the outrageous efforts of the make up department. It does exactly what it says on the tin, a girl in a tank taking on the world with lots of attitude and a very cartoon strip vibe, perfect for this film.

A good fun way to spend an evening and with lots of special features, a crisp blu-ray restoration and a collector’s booklet, this release is sure to delight fans of the giant talking kangaroo men.

“Look, it’s been swell, but the swelling’s gone down.”

Tank Girl is available on Limited Edition Collector’s Blu-ray from 25th November 2024.
