4 star tense and exciting home invasion thriller.
See For Me is a Canadian thriller penned by first time feature writers Adam Yorke and Tommy Gushue and expertly directed by second time feature director Randall Okita (The Lockpicker). A very impressive start to their respective careers.
“Wait, we’ve got a problem. I think someone’s here.”
Sophie Scott (Skyler Davenport – Masamune-kun’s Revenge, Kakegurui) is a young former champion skier whose career has been cut short by a disease which has destroyed her eyesight. Disillusioned, she rejects the attempts of her friend Cam (Keaton Kaplan) to persuade her to learn to ski with him as a guide and try out for the Olympics.
Instead, she takes on jobs cat and house sitting for rich home owners, much to the consternation of her mother (Natalie Brown – Nightmare Alley, The Expanse), who can’t understand why she seems to be earning more money than she should be. In fact, Cam is helping her to steal expensive wine from the houses and sell it for profit.
When she arrives at the home of Debra (Laura Vandervoort – Smallville, Bitten) however, Cam gets cold feet, fed up of being an accessory to a crime. He hangs up, leaving her to explore alone. When she accidentally gets locked out, she is forced to use an app her mother recommended, called See For Me. She gets help from an ex-military gamer named Kelly (Jessica Parker Kennedy – The Flash, Black Sails) who gets her back inside.
Later on, her help is required again when the house is broken into by three men, Otis (George Tchortov – Goon, Stanleyville), Ernie (Pascal Langdale – Kill Joys, Heavy Rain (video game)) and Dave (Joe Pingue – La Switch, Anon). They seem to be in the employ of Rico (Kim Coates – Sons of Anarchy, Waterworld), a voice on the other end of the phone. Can Kelly help Sophie to survive this deadly game of cat and mouse?
“Do you think I wanted to bring you all the way out here so I could embarrass myself like this?”
See For Me is a very enjoyable film and a great new take on a well established genre. It’s a great addition, with lots of twists and turns, which leave you with no idea where they are going with it. What feels as if it’s going to be a predictable watch turns out to be anything but.
The acting is excellent, Sophie is a pretty unlikable character who is perfectly counterpointed by the understanding and patient, yet very proficient Kelly. It’s well filmed too, although it can be a little dark at times, but I think maybe that just helps you to identify with the blind protagonist.
It’s also really good that it raises awareness of the apps which are available to assist the visually impaired. A great idea for a story, unpredictable and for the most part well executed. Absolutely well worth a watch.
“Sophie, listen to me. Don’t shake them off like the guy who grabs your arm in the subway. Let them think they helped, so they can walk the f**k out feeling happy with themselves.”
