4 star psycho chick flick!
We Summon the Darkness is written by Alan Trezza and directed by Mark Meyers (My Friend Dahmer, Human Capital) and is a horror in the vein of the classic slasher flick from Frightfest Presents.
“Stop being so paranoid, it’s not like he’s gonna murder us. Just relax.”
It’s summertime and three young girls, Alexis (Alexandra Daddario – Baywatch, San Andreas), Val (Maddie Hasson – Twisted, More Than Enough) and Beverley (Amy Forsyth – Hell Fest, Robot Chicken) are on a road trip, their destination a heavy metal gig, the Soldiers of Satan. They are a little jumpy, a satanic cult has been randomly murdering people, so they need to be careful.
They have a scare on the road, as a passing van launches a missile onto their windscreen, but it turns out to be a false alarm, just chocolate milkshake. When they arrive at the gig however, the van is there too. After retaliatory action they meet the culprits. Three enthusiastic young lads, Ivan (Austin Swift – I.T., Cover Versions), Kovacs (Logan Miller – Love, Simon, Prey) and Mark (Keean Johnson – Alita: Battle Angel, Nashville) are quick to apologise and offer a beer when they see the lovely ladies.
The girls are sceptical at first, but more beer flows and when the concert is finished Alexis decides to trust them and invites them back to her father’s house half an hours drive away. With everything not quite as it appears to be, a game of “never have I ever” quickly turns into a night none of them will ever forget!
We Summon the Darkness is a very enjoyable popcorn horror. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time there is plenty of blood and lots of slashing, enough to moderately satisfy a gore-hound.
It’s well written with a few nice, if slightly predictable twists and the acting is pretty good too. All in all, a great watch and any horror fan would be happy to add this to their collection.
“You’re killing people and making it look like a satanic cult?!”
We Summon the Darkness is available on Digital HD from 20th April 2020 and will be released on DVD 11th May 2020.
