A Journey of 1.1 Million Lifetimes.
On International Holocaust Day Jan 27th 2025 Sky History release this documentary, about Gary Sokolov, the sixty-three-year-old son of Gita and Lali Sokolov (one of the real-life tattooists of Auschwitz). After the death of Gita in 2003, Lali opened up to author Heather Morris about his life, love and the horrors of being sent to Auschwitz. Which became an International Best Seller and spawned the six-episode TV series starring Harvey Keitel (Lansky (A righteous Man), Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs) and Jonah Hauer-King (Rich Flu, The Little Mermaid) as Lali, and Anna Próchniak as Gita (Oleg, The Innocents) who both appear in this documentary.
Gary Sokolov, the only son of Lali and Gita, was born in Australia. After the couple survived the murdering Nazis’, they fled Europe to get as far away from their past as possible. There their love grew, and they tried to
put their past behind them, but that was impossible. They did not share their experiences with the young Gary, but he wanted to find out what they went through, and through Heather Morris his journey began.
Filmed and directed by Stephen Bennett (Eminent Monsters, Murder in a Small Town (TV Mini Series)) and with haunting music from Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Dune (2021)) and Kara Talve (The Planets, Prehistoric Planet) that accompany Gary’s nerve shattering journey as he travels to the birthplace’s of both his parents, and more importantly find some stones for their graves.
But ultimately getting to go through the gates of Auschwitz death camp where one-point one-million out of the six-million Jews and invalids or undesirables in their eyes were murdered.
Follow Gary’s emotional and historic journey, in this amazing must see documentary, as we travel into the recent past and mark the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of the death camp.
