Presented here are all the episodes from the Michael Aspel era, now available on DVD courtesy of Network.
“I was drunk with the success. Oh, I was throbbing with it. Oh, it’s marvellous when you’ve pulled it off.”
Give Us A Clue is a celebrity version of the party game charades. The show took the form of two teams of four pitted against each other. It is a battle of the sexes, with the ladies team captained by the lovely Una Stubbs, and the mens team captained by Lionel Blair.
The celebrities must mime whatever is written on a card and the team have two minutes to guess what it is before it’s thrown open to the opposing team.
There are a number of set gestures which can be used, such as book, television, film, but the rest are totally open to interpretation which leads to a large amount of hilarity as you can well imagine. Throw in a pretty haphazard scoring system and chaos is bound to ensue.
The shows on this set feature a galaxy of celebrities, comedians and actors, including: Kenneth Williams, Diana Dors, Richard O’Sullivan, Barbara Windsor, Robin Askwith, David Jason, Yootha Joyce, Mollie Sugden, Paula Wilcox, Spike Milligan, Russ Abbot, Warren Mitchell, Kenny Everett, June Whitfield, Terry Scott, Dick Emery, Maureen Lipman, Beryl Reid, Rodney Bewes, Faith Brown, Paul Eddington, John Inman, Dudley Moore, Victoria Wood, all three Goodies and two Doctors Who!
This trip down memory lane is marvellous, and ideal for those afternoons when there’s nothing on T.V. Game show fans will be overjoyed to find this box set in their Christmas stocking.
“Well, with the flying humpty dumpty, that brings the score to sixteen to the girls, fourteen to the fellas, a nice close match.”
