3 Star
Jealousy, a Family and Zombies.
The Driver comes from a man that likes to write and direct his own films and that man is Wych Kaosayananda (Angels, Tekken: A Man Called X, 2 Guns: Zero Tolerance). He brings us a family lead story rather than the full on survival movie. The zombies have been around for a while and humans have managed to find small pockets of survivors, they now live in small heavily guarded compounds, and The Driver is about one family in one of these compounds.
Two men in a BMW 420i M Sport driving down an empty Taiwanese road. In control is The Driver (Mark Dacascos. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV Series), The Extendables) and one of his most trusted friends Joe (Jeremy Stutes, Melissa & Joey (TV Series)) is sat in the passenger street. There is a knocking from the boot (trunk) of the car. Tony (Shivam Pawa, One Night in Bangkok) is awake and the reason he is restrained in the rear of the car is the three strikes and out rule of their community, he was caught stealing water to make moonshine again. Now this is serious, The Driver and fellow leader Gabriel (Adam zachary Smith, The Asian Connection) have decreed that Tony must vanish and The Driver has the skills to do so.
But it is Joe that decides Tony’s fate, freedom or a bullet in the head? He chooses freedom but when Joe fires off a few rounds, he regrets his choice as the zombies are everywhere in the tall grasses and trees, and they are attracted by any noise.
Back at the community they are well-prepared for the months ahead with fresh produce and fuel for generators, as humans have to operate at night while the zombies rule the daytime.
There is something on The Drivers mind, a dying man at the side of the road told him that he had been heading for Haven, a safe well guarded commune up North on highway seven, and the driver is determined to get his wife Sharon (Julie Condra, Eerie, Indiana (TV Series) , Road to Redemption) and his daughter Bree (Noelani Dacascos, Oh Lucy!) to safety.
With people wanting what The Driver has and also the zombies trying to swell their numbers, this is a story of zombie eat humans and the struggle to be safe.
With a lot of gun play and a smattering of martial arts which thrill and help along this family unit based horror.
The Driver is available on DVD
