4 Star
Another Slice of Classic Horror
Eureka Classics once again take us back in time, when horror on the silver screen in cinemas sent shivers up and down the spines of audiences. Now on Blu-ray for you to experience in your own home, up close and personal. With one pre-enforced Hollywood production code (Hayes code) in Murders in the zoo and some shocking images, Eureka Classics brings you four slices of Monochrome horror royalty.
Murders in the Zoo, is a gruesome tale of jealousy, set around the lengths a man will go to stop his philanderess wife, Evelyn (Kathleen Burke, The Last Outpost, Good Girl). Zoologist Eric Gorman (Lionel Atwill, To Be or Not to Be, The Electric Man) is wealthy, and has his own zoo which he puts to great use, as he collects wild animals from across Asia and  further afield. Evelyn cannot help herself, when on the ship back to America she has another relationship, with Roger Hewitt (John Lodge, The Scarlet Empress, Menace) with plans to escape and divorce the murderous jealous zoologist.
Night Monster Kurt Ingston (Ralph Morgan, Power and Glory, Rasputin the Mad Monk) lives in a big house in the swamps where gruesome murders have taken place. The well respected Ingston is not under suspicion due to him being paralysed and in a wheelchair. His sister Margaret (Fay Helm, The Wolf Man, Phantom Lady) is always being hounded by the burly housekeeper Miss Judd (Doris Lloyd, The Sound of Music, The Time Machine). Looking after Kurt’s mental health is Eastern Mystic Agor Singh (Nils Asther, The Man in Half Moon Street, The Feathered Serpent), before he was paralysed there were three doctors working to prevent it, and Kurt blames them for his condition, there will be mysterious murders.
Horror Island sees Bill Martin (Dick Foran, Fort Apache, Please Murder Me!), an educated man who has the honour of owning a small island off the coast of Florida called “Morgan’s Island”. It is of no use to him, that is until he and his friend Stuff Oliver (Fuzzy Knight, She Done Him Wrong, The Bounty Killer) save a drowning peg legged Tobias Clump (Leo Carrillo, Cisco Kid, The Guilty Generation) who in gratitude gives them a part of a treasure map, which happens to be treasure from infamous buccaneer Sir Henry Morgan’s twenty million dollar treasure. The other part of the map is with a phantom that pushed Clump into the water. Mystery and intrigue.
House of Horrors Struggling sculptor Marcel de Lange (Martin Kosleck, Foreign Correspondent, A Date with Destiny) is a man down in the dumps, and at his lowest he decides that he must end it all. But as he is about to do the deed, he sees the notorious madman ‘The Creeper’ (Rondo Hatton, The Pearl of Death, In Old Chicago) drowning. He decides to put his suicide attempt on hold and he saves the drowning man. This sculptor finds he has a new muse, and decides to sculpt this hulk of a man. But his work is not to the taste of the critics. That is why they must die.
Creeping Horror is another great release from Eureka, and their Eureka Classics portfolio. A must for the monochrome fans and classic horror fans.
