4 stars of deliciously nerdy gaming action.
Max Reload and the Nether Blasters is a 2020 retro gaming action adventure sci-fi, written and directed by Scott Conditt and Jeremy Tremp, with both of them making their highly entertaining feature directorial debut.
It is available now on DVD. Blu-ray and Digital courtesy of Dazzler Media.
“Be the hero in your own life. Carpe Deez Nuts. Solid Gramps, solid.”
Max Reload (Tom Plumley – Adrift in Time), Lizzi3 (Hassie Harrison – Yellowstone, Tacoma FD) and Pork Chop (Joey Morgan – Camp Manna, Flower), a.k.a. Max, Liz and Reggie are massive online gaming fans.
All three of them work at the Fallout Games store for the ultimate gamer nerd Chuck (Kevin Smith – Dogma, Mallrats) where they have access to all the latest games and equipment.
One night while working the graveyard shift, a mysterious man comes into the shop, leaving a box on the counter and vanishing into the night. When he investigates the contents, Max discovers the holy grail of gaming history, Nether Dungeon, as well as a console on which to play it. Created years before by Wylde Child games, it was believed that every copy had been lost in a warehouse fire and the game was never released.
Max eagerly takes it home and does a playthrough for his YouTube channel, however he soon realises this is an even bigger opportunity so he uploads it for everyone else to play. Little does he realise that he has unwittingly unleashed an ancient evil upon the world, hidden in the code.
With downloads of the game increasing rapidly, the only hope lies with the creators of the game, Eugene Wylder (Greg Grunberg – Castle Rock, Big Ass Spider!) and Barton Grabowski (Joseph D. Reitman – The Blackout, This is Meg). Can they put aside their differences and help this unlikely band of teen heroes to save the world?
“In the dungeon deep a challenge awaits. Dare enter the keep and accept thy fate.”
Max Reload and the Nether Blasters is an extremely enjoyable film, especially if you are hard core gaming enthusiasts. It’s mix of retro game graphics, live action and cartoon animations works really well.
Storyline wise it doesn’t really bring anything new to the party, but it’s well enough written and the acting is surprisingly good. There is also a very amusing appearance from Lin Shaye (The Final Wish, Insidous: Chapter III), brilliant. Be warned, Kevin Smith is his usual enthusiastic self, so if you’re not a fan of his work, you won’t enjoy this either.
A great watch which put a smile on my face all the way. Grab the popcorn and settle down in front of the TV for some retro fun. Well worth adding to your collection.
“First things first bud. You roll into our store and blast our zombied out friend here with your ghetto rig light blaster, dressed like some bargain basement Boba Fett cosplay as****e, and you think you’re calling the shots?”
