You’re Next (2011) Limited Edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray Review

4 star restoration of a refreshingly different slasher film.

You’re Next is an American slasher horror film. Originally released in 2011, it is directed by Adam Wingard (V/H/S, The Guest) and written by Simon Barrett (V/H/S/94, Dead Birds).

It has enjoyed a 4K UHD restoration and will be available to own on Limited Edition 4k UHD and Blu-ray from 19th August 2024, courtesy of Second Sight Films.

“I’m tired of it. The whole time you’ve been here you’ve been needling me and I’m not putting up with it any more.” 

It tells the story of the Davison family, reunited for the wedding anniversary of their parents, the four siblings – three brothers, one sister and their respective partners gather at the newly acquired and extremely secluded family mansion for a weekend in the country.

The evening begins to go down hill as a chilling message “You’re Next” is scrawled on a neighbours wall and the mysterious masked gang move on to the Davison property and begin to pick off the family one by one, using a selection of sophisticated weapons and elaborate traps.

However, they haven’t bargained for the presence of Erin (Sharni Vinson – Bait, Home and Away), the girlfriend of Crispian (A.J.Bowen – Dead Night, The House Of The Devil), who seems to have an interesting skill set and a well developed sense of self preservation.

“It’s not about that, nobody needs to run, we need to all stay inside. I don’t know how many people are out there.”

On first watching You’re Next, I thought here we go, another cliched slasher flick, but in fact it has a number of surprising twists and turns and was more enjoyable than expected. It’s a good idea for a story, well written and well acted and has a good cast, including Barbara Crampton (Jakob’s Wife, Re-Animator), Joe Swanberg (The Sacrament, White Reindeer) and Larry Fessenden (Dementer, We Are Still Here)

The masks used are actually quite scary and the gore is pretty graphic and well done, but it also has plenty of black comedy thrown in to soften the blow. Although You’re Next is a horror film, the net result feels a little bit like some bizarre cross between Home Alone and Rambo. Still good fun though, a very enjoyable watch and well worth a look.

This Limited Edition release boasts lots of special features, including new commentaries and plenty of new interviews, along with new artwork, art cards and a 120 page booklet of essays. The film looks and sounds great, with even more gory detail than before, happy days.
