4 star teen spy action thriller.
Alex Rider: Season 1 is based on the series of spy novels for young adults written by Anthony Horowitz (The Power of Five). It is a British spy thriller, created for television by Guy Burt (The Hole, Joe All Alone) and will be available on DVD in the UK from 3rd October 2022, courtesy of Dazzler Media.
“You guys go scuba diving in the Med, and canopy climbing in the jungle. That thing with the yurts and the camel dung? That was not boring. It was disgusting, but it was not boring.”
Alex Rider (Otto Farrant – War and Peace, The White Queen) is a seemingly normal teenager. He lives with his Uncle Ian (Andrew Buchan – Broadchurch, Garrow’s Law) and their American housekeeper Jack Starbright (Ronke Adekoluejo – Divine, Been So Long) and enjoys nothing more than hanging out with best mate Tom (Brenock O’Connor – Game of Thrones, Living the Dream).
His life is changed one day when Uncle Ian is killed in a car accident. Alex is suspicious and after some sleuthing discovers that it wasn’t an accident at all. His Uncle was in fact an undercover agent pretending to work in a bank. He encounters Alan Blunt (Stephen Dillane – The Hours, Spy Game) and Mrs Jones (Vicky McClure – This England. Line of Duty) who are both working for MI6.
Realising that he has some skills, they decide to recruit him to continue his Uncles’ investigation, into a school for the troubled children of billionaires, called Point Blanc. He is reluctant but they have their means and he finds himself thrown into a world of espionage and intrigue. Does he have what it takes to get the job done?
“Well, you know Alex. He’s bright and he’s determined and he questions everything, but he can be impulsive and he can be irresponsible and I need you to help set him clear boundaries.”
Alex Rider is a really entertaining TV series, full of action and very watchable. It may have been written for young adults, but there is plenty here for everyone to enjoy.
It’s well written with excellent performances all round, especially from Otto Farrant who stands out as Alex. These are genuinely well thought out spy stories, as good as anything Hollywood will throw at you and with lots of twists and turns this will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the very end.
Great fun and well worth adding to your collection.
“He sees straight through our cover, gives one of our agents a broken nose and then follows you all the way across London and finds his way here.”
