5 star brutal, bloody non-stop martial arts action.
Boy Kills World is a 2024 dystopian action comedy film, with a screenplay from Tyler Burton Smith (Child’s Play) and Arend Remmers (Snowflake, Dreamfactory), who also co-wrote the story, alongside Moritz Mohr, who makes a truly remarkable and accomplished feature directorial debut.
“That’s not a very good disguise. Butterflies don’t exactly blend in.”
Boy (Cameron Crovetti – Goodnight Mommy, The Boys and Nicholas Crovetti – We the Coyotes, Witch Hunt) lives in a dystopian city with his mother and younger sister Mina (Quinn Copeland – Punky Brewster), with whom he plays video games and dreams of their future together.
The city is run by the Van Der Koy family, led by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen – X Men. GoldenEye) along with Gideon (Brett Gelman – Strays, Stranger Things), Melanie (Michelle Dockery – Downton Abbey, The Gentlemen) and her husband Glen (Sharlto Copley – District 9, Chappie). Once a year, twelve individuals from the city are rounded up for “The Culling”, to be killed live on television.
This year Boy, his mother and Mina are among the chosen. Somehow, Boy survives and is left for dead, however he is found and nursed back to health by a mysterious Shaman (Yayan Ruhian – Skyline, Mat Kilau). He is left deaf and mute, but the Shaman trains him in martial art in order to seek his revenge.
After years of intense training, he is finally ready and is unleashed the day before that years culling. Spurred on by both his internal monologue (H. Jon Benjamin – Not Another Teen Movie) and hallucinations of his dead sister, he sets out to avenge his family. But what is the real agenda here and who will survive the ensuing mayhem?
“I know we can’t stay here. And now we have something they can’t take away. A perfect moment. Just you and me. Here, together. When something’s special enough, you can always go back to it. So let’s make this special. Are you with me?”
Boy Kills World is an extremely enjoyable watch. It is a fantastic blend of dystopian sci-fi, martial arts and full on in your face bloody action. The fight sequences are fast paced and brutal and very well choreographed, thoroughly entertaining.
As well as all the blood (and there is a lot of that), there is also plenty of laugh out loud comedy. It’s a bold move to have a mute main character, driving the action through an internal monologue, but it pays off admirably here, as we hear Boy’s often hilarious take on the situations in which he finds himself.
If you are a fan of martial arts or action films, then this outrageous and fun psychedelic slaughterfest will be right up your street. An excellent rollercoaster ride of a film and well worth adding to your collection.
“This time we’re going to make it. From now on we make our own rules. Nobody tells us what to do. I’m going to take us far away from this totalitarian hellhole”
Boy Kills World is available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD from 5th August 2024.
