Creep (2014) Limited Edition Blu-ray Review****-

Cert 15 | 77 mins | 2014

4 star masterful and genuinely scary horror tale.

Creep is a 2014 found footage horror/thriller, directed, co-written by and also starring Patrick Brice (Creep 2, The Overnight), who made his fantastic feature directorial debut with this effective film. Writing credits also go to Mark Duplass (The One I Love, Language Lessons), who stars alongside Brice.

This excellent and suspenseful horror is available in the UK on Limited Edition and STandard Edition Blu-ray from 9th December 2024, courtesy of Second Sight Films.

“I’m not sure who I’m meeting. The ad said one thousand dollars for the day, filming services. Discretion is appreciated, whatever that means.”

Aaron (Brice) is a photojournalist who is responding to an ad for an extremely well paid gig up in the mountains. Full of anticipation, he heads up to the cabin, but when he arrives there’s no answer and no-one there. He waits in his car and that’s when Josef (Duplass) appears at his window out of nowhere, in what is the first of many perfectly executed jump scares.

Josef has hired him to film a day in his life. He has an inoperable brain tumour and wants to document himself for his unborn son, Buddy. Things get off to a strange start, when he immediately gets naked and climbs into the bath. But it seems innocent enough, he’s filming a ‘tubby’ for his son so he can experience it after he has gone.

They then head out to find a heart shaped rock pool in the mountains, spending the day together and having deep discussions. It’s all fine, if a little strange, until it’s time to leave and his keys go missing. A phone call turns everything on its head and it’s time to ask the question, who is Josef and what has Aaron got himself into?

“This is no longer a business transaction, okay? This is a partnership and this is a journey into the heart and erm…I’m really glad it’s you with me.”

Creep is a quite remarkable film. Despite obvious budgetary restrictions, the filming style is incredibly effective. The found footage style allows for a more intimate portrayal of the action and it’s well done, not relying on the motion sickness inducing head sway which some film use to disorientate the viewer.

The introduction of the unforgettable “Peachfuzz” character near to the start puts you on edge almost immediately and we are well aware that nothing is as it seems. The anticipation and suspense are ramped up brilliantly, it’s almost crippling in places and as we see twist after twist, there’s no let up until the credits roll. If you’re after gore, this isn’t for you but if you want a suspenseful thriller then it doesn’t get much better than this.

A brilliantly executed and great fun to watch found footage horror film and a great presentation with lots of special features. An ideal Christmas present for the horror fan in your life.

“There was about two seconds there, after you were done being scared, where it looked like you wanted to kill me…I don’t take it personally, I think it was a visceral reaction, you know?”
